2016 Habitat Mission
“Out in the highways and byways of life, many are weary and sad”…one reason nine Little Chapel on the Boardwalk missionaries carried sunshine and gladness across the state to Avery County, NC on September 6th. We joined forces with our friends in Christ from Crossnore Presbyterian Church [and 11 other congregations in NC, Virginia and New Jersey] to participate in a Presbyterian Habitat build in Elk Park, NC. Our main focus was to assist the Jones family in building their “dream come true” home. Some of our chores included drilling holes for plumbing, installing insulation tape around window and door openings, work site clean-up, caulking, and working on the porch ceiling and the fascia on the eaves. Additionally, some of us traveled about 15 miles from Elk Park (a 30 minute journey due to the sharp curves) to clean another Habitat home that is being renovated for a new family. We power washed the deck, washed windows and screens, removed construction dust, cleaned the bathroom, “swiffered” the newly installed floors and left pleased with the sparkling results of our hard work. Crossnore Presbyterian Church delivered lunch to the worksite for us on Wednesday and Thursday. We were effective in giving a hands-up to two working families in a very poor area of our state.
One special memory from the trip was a joint dinner with Crossnore Presbyterian Church on Wednesday night in Banner Elk at a Mexican Restaurant. About two dozen of us sang “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow” and got a round of applause from strangers in the restaurant.
We were up early on September 10 and after we packed our vehicles (like sardines) for our trip home, we journeyed from Boone to Crossnore Presbyterian Church for breakfast. If you are ever close by on the second Saturday of June, July, August or September, please treat yourself. An eight dollar donation buys an all you can eat breakfast including pancakes, omelets to order, sausage gravy and biscuits and much more! Delish!!
It is always a blessing to build better relationships with our church family and working and living together fosters community! We know and appreciate that we are truly blessed and pray that “out of our lives, may Jesus shine”. Thanks for your love, prayers and support of the missions of our church!
