Avery County Mission 2015
On Monday, October12, three cars caravanned westward heading to Banner Elk, NC. The farther west we went, the more beautiful the scenery was becoming. We were blessed that we could be in the mountains at the height of the leaf peeping season. The weather was even perfect. So gorgeous!
Our mission group stayed at Grandfather Home for Children (ages 12-18) as their guests in one of their cottages. It was just the right size for us. On Tuesday, we headed to Crossnore School where we had a wonderful tour of their campus, then spent the day cleaning, scrubbing, vacuuming, painting, and putting new furniture together for their new recreation center for their older children. We were invited as their guests to have lunch at the children’s dining hall. It was heartwarming to see the children enjoying lunch together. It is hard to believe that all those children had been in danger in their own homes.
On Tuesday night, we enjoyed dinner with members of Crossnore Presbyterian Church. It was so nice to connect with these people again.
On Wednesday, we worked all day at Grandfather Home. There was more cleaning, more scrubbing, etc. in one of their buildings by half our group and all day raking leaves for the other half. The scrubbers and cleaners joined us rakers after lunch for an afternoon of raking and loading a dump truck full of leaves over and over again. The groundskeepers were so grateful for all we did. They are down to just three men to maintain all the grounds of this large campus.
Working at both of these homes for children, although we did simple things, was such an example of being God’s hands in His world. It was a privilege to be of some small help to both Grandfather Home and Crossnore School.
