Over a century on the boardwalk
Little Chapel began as a summer mission outpost in 1907— as a summer worshipping community at the Lumina. The congregation formed as a joint venture between First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington and St. James Episcopal Church downtown. For the first few decades, we welcomed preachers for the summer season, and after World War II as Wrightsville Beach became more of a year-round community, we identified a need for church services year-round. In 1952, we opened our sanctuary at our current site on the corner of W. Fayetteville S. and N. Lumina Ave. We became fully Presbyterian and called an installed pastor.
Today it is a year-round PCUSA congregation that holds two distinct Sunday services, operates Matthew House as a working mission retreat, and continues the same practice of welcome it has kept for generations.

While Wrightsville Beach has grown around us, our mission remains unchanged. We continue to blend reformed Presbyterian traditions with casual, open-hearted coastal hospitality.
